Texas Grandma Runs Over Accomplice In U-Haul During High Speed Chase

A Texas grandmother is facing a felony murder charge after she ran over and killed one of her alleged accomplices during a burglary. Police said that 54-year-old Diwanna Corstera Thomas pulled up to a closed convenience store in Houston in a U-Haul truck with three other men. The men jumped out of the truck and used bolt cutters to break open the locks. They raided the store and tried to break open an ATM but were unable to get any cash. They left the store with what they could carry and got back into the U-Haul truck.

An off-duty police officer happened to be in the area and witnessed the break-in. He called 911 and responding officers began to chase after Thomas. As Thomas led officers on a 30-minute high-speed chase, one of the men inside the truck tried to escape. He managed to leap from the moving vehicle but did not get very far before he was detained by officers.

As the chase continued, another one of the suspects had the same idea. When he tried to jump from the truck, he got caught on the passenger side mirror and fell to the ground. He was run over by the vehicle and died from his injuries. Thomas refused to stop after running over her accomplice, and officers had to use spike strips to blow out her tires. Once the truck came to a stop, Thomas and her third partner were taken into custody without incident.

Thomas was charged with aggravated assault of a police officer, felony murder, and driving while intoxicated, and a judge set her bail at $75,000. She has a lengthy criminal history, including convictions for robbery, auto theft, and drug-related offenses.
